Christmas in July Lunch 2026 at Benguela Cove: A Winter Table Worth the Drive

By Christo Hattingh, Executive Head Chef, Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate
July in the Western Cape is cold, grey, and - if you ask me - exactly the right time to gather around a table. I've cooked Christmas in July lunches on three continents, from Scotland to Bavaria to the Cape, and there's something about midwinter that makes people eat more slowly, laugh more easily, and linger longer over a glass of wine. On Sunday, 19 July 2026, Moody Lagoon Restaurant at Benguela Cove opens its doors from 12:00 to 17:00 for our Christmas in July Harvest lunch - and it's the kind of afternoon I look forward to planning all year.
What Is Christmas in July, and Why Does It Work So Well at Benguela Cove?
Christmas in July is South Africa's midwinter answer to the December holiday table - a tradition rooted in the European habit of celebrating the festive season when it's actually cold. At Benguela Cove, sitting on the edge of the lagoon inside the Kogelberg UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, winter arrives with a particular quality of light and quiet that suits a long, unhurried lunch. The estate's cool-climate, maritime conditions - the same conditions that define our wines - make July here feel genuinely festive.
The Menu: Harvest Style, Designed to Pair with Our Wines
I've built this year's menu around the Harvest Style format; shared, generous, and ingredient-led. Every dish connects to what the estate and its surroundings produce at this time of year.
We begin the afternoon with a traditional welcome drink of warm mulled wine. To start, we serve a milkbun wreath accompanied by a selection of flavoured butters. For the main course, guests choose between two festive staples:
-
Gammon basted with BBQ and pineapple.
-
Chicken served with traditional stuffing.
We accompany these with roasted baby potatoes and a cumin and coriander carrot mash. A traditional potato salad completes the harvest-style spread. To finish, we offer "Canape Style" desserts: cream puffs filled with cinnamon mousse and our signature Benguela Christmas Pudding served with whipped cream.
The gammon pairs well with our Estate Sauvignon Blanc - the citrus and sea-spray character cuts through the richness of the pineapple basting. For the chicken, I'd reach for the Syrah: the white pepper and blueberry notes complement the stuffing without overpowering it. On dessert, the Christmas Pudding alongside a glass of our Rosé is a pairing that still surprises guests every time.
A Destination Worth the Drive, Not Just a Restaurant Meal
What sets this lunch apart from a standalone restaurant booking is the estate itself. Benguela Cove sits 15 km from Hermanus and roughly 88 km from Cape Town - close enough for a comfortable day trip, far enough to feel like a proper escape.
Before or after lunch, guests can explore:
-
The wine tasting room (book your tasting in advance)
-
A walk along the estate's lagoon waterfront trail
-
Pirate Adventure Golf and the splash pad for younger guests
-
The Lady Bonnie pontoon boat for seasonal lagoon tours
July is also prime whale-watching season along the Cape Whale Coast, which means a lunch at Benguela Cove pairs naturally with a morning or afternoon stop at the Hermanus cliff paths - one of the world's best land-based whale-watching destinations.

Christmas in July Frequently Asked Questions
Is Benguela Cove a good wet-weather option in July? July in the Western Cape brings cold fronts and occasional rain - but Moody Lagoon Restaurant is fully enclosed with lagoon views, making it a weather-proof destination. The estate's indoor wine tasting room and dining venues mean a misty or rainy winter's day doesn't derail the experience. It often adds atmosphere.
Do I need to book in advance for the Christmas in July lunch? Yes - booking is essential. The Christmas in July lunch on 19 July 2026 is a ticketed event with limited covers at Moody Lagoon Restaurant. We recommend booking as early as possible, particularly for groups of six or more. Contact us at info@benguelacove.co.za or call +27 (0)87 357 0637.
Is there a kids menu for the Christmas in July lunch? Yes, a children's menu is available. Benguela Cove is a family-friendly estate with Pirate Adventure Golf and a splash pad on site, so children are well catered for beyond the table as well.
How far is Benguela Cove from Cape Town - is it worth the drive for lunch? Benguela Cove is 88 km from Cape Town International Airport, approximately one hour by car. Most guests combine the lunch with a morning wine tasting, a lagoon walk, or whale watching along the Hermanus cliff paths, making it a full day out rather than just a meal.
Can I do a wine tasting on the same day as the lunch? Yes. The Benguela Cove tasting room is open on the estate. We recommend booking your tasting separately and scheduling it before the lunch, so you can carry your favourites to the table. Some guests arrive mid-morning, taste through the range, and then settle into lunch at noon.
What makes the Christmas in July lunch different from a regular Sunday lunch at Moody Lagoon? This is a set festive menu designed specifically for the occasion - mulled wine on arrival, a Harvest-style main course, and dessert served canapé-style. It runs for a generous five-hour window from 12:00 to 17:00, which gives guests time to eat, explore the estate, and enjoy the lagoon setting without feeling rushed.
Does Benguela Cove operate sustainably? Yes. Benguela Cove holds Travelife Gold certification and is a WWF Conservation Champion. The estate sits within the Kogelberg UNESCO Biosphere Reserve - South Africa's first biosphere reserve. My menus draw on estate-grown produce, local suppliers, and seasonal ingredients. Sustainability isn't a marketing claim here; it shapes every decision we make in the kitchen and across the estate.
