International Sauvignon Blanc Day 2026

International Sauvignon Blanc Day 2026

Celebrate International Sauvignon Blanc Day 2026 with Benguela Cove

While the country marks International Sauvignon Blanc Day 2026, we invite you to experience the cultivar at its source. Join us at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate this long weekend, from 1 to 3 May, to explore the #72FlavoursofSauvignonBlanc in the heart of Walker Bay. Trade the crowds for the serene beauty of the Bot River Lagoon and escape to our ocean-facing vineyards.

Whether you are a dedicated Sauvignon Blanc enthusiast or simply seeking the perfect setting to savour the season, we have curated the ideal experience. Visit our Tasting Room for a guided flight of our Lighthouse and Estate collections, or linger over lunch at the Moody Lagoon Restaurant, where our chefs pair fresh, local seafood with the crisp, saline tension of our cool-climate wines. It is the perfect environment to discover why this dramatic, maritime terroir produces such distinctive and age-worthy Sauvignon Blanc.

While the nation celebrates the variety, we invite you to experience its truest expression at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate. Where the Benguela Current meets the vine, every glass tells the story of Walker Bay. We have become a defining voice in cool-climate winemaking.

Located between Hermanus and Cape Town, our estate features one of the world’s longest continuous stretches of ocean-facing vineyards. We sit just 3 metres above sea level at the edge of the Bot River Lagoon. In this marginal, dramatic landscape, Sauvignon Blanc thrives.

The Terroir: Why Walker Bay Changes Everything

Sauvignon Blanc is a "grape of place". At Benguela Cove, the Benguela Current, a cold upwelling from the Southern Ocean acts as an invisible winemaker. This maritime influence moderates daytime heat while cool nights lock in the vivid acidity and aromatic tension essential for premium wine.

The 70-hectare vineyard is nestled within the UNESCO-designated Kogelberg Biosphere, one of the most botanically diverse places on Earth. Growing in chalky, iron-rich cobblestone and Bokkeveld shale, the vines produce fruit with a distinct mineral edge.

Here is the revised "Four Expressions" section, updated to include the Vinography Sauvignon Blanc. I have adjusted the section title to reflect the expansion of the range.

Four Expressions, One Extraordinary Estate

Benguela Cove offers a quartet of Sauvignon Blancs, each reflecting a different facet of our unique terroir:

Named after the lighthouse overlooking the lagoon, this is an approachable, celebratory wine. The nose bursts with gooseberry and grapefruit, leading to a palate of melon and peach with a saline, oyster-shell finish.

Best paired with: Fresh oysters, smoked salmon, or a light Caprese salad.

This is Sauvignon Blanc as a serious statement. It offers vivid aromas of green fig, bell pepper, and gunflint, supported by a racy, focused acidity. It is a wine of great balance, intensity, and concentration.

Best paired with: Grilled linefish, goat’s cheese, or herb-crusted lamb.

This wine represents the pinnacle of our cool-climate craft. Sourced from our most expressive vineyard blocks, it undergoes meticulous selection to ensure unparalleled quality. Expect intense concentration, layered textures, and a profound depth that continues to evolve in the glass. It marries power with precision, showcasing the absolute purity of Walker Bay fruit.

Best paired with: Pan-seared scallops, butter-poached lobster, or truffle-infused risotto.

A testament to the variety’s versatility, this dessert wine proves that ocean-cooled terroir can produce something richly honeyed without losing freshness. Expect aromas of honey blossom and dried peach with a long, warm finish. Best paired with: Ripe figs, blue cheese, or crème brûlée.

"The unique location of our vineyards doesn't only make for wines showing a strong sense of place but also a style that's elegant with beautiful balance." - Johann Fourie, Cellar Master

Sustainability: Honouring the Earth

At Benguela Cove, sustainability is guided by the /Xam San concept of hannuwa - living in sustainable harmony with the natural environment. Under the leadership of Penny Streeter OBE, the estate focuses on protecting the Kogelberg Biosphere and Bot River Lagoon, treating the soil, water, and wildlife as partners rather than resources.

How to Celebrate

To fully appreciate these cool-climate gems on 1 May 2026, follow these simple tips:

  • Temperature Matters: Serve the Lighthouse Collection chilled (8-10°C) and the Estate Collection slightly warmer (10-12°C) to allow the complexity to breathe.

  • Savour the Origin: Before sipping, notice the luminous straw-green hue and the maritime aromatics. You aren't just tasting wine; you are tasting the Antarctic current and the salt air of Walker Bay.

Raise a glass to the ocean. Happy International Sauvignon Blanc Day.
