Corporate Social Responsibility

Benguela Cove Wine Estate’s Corporate Social Responsibility

Nestled in the tranquil embrace of a lagoon at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, Benguela Cove Wine Estate exemplifies Corporate Social Responsibility on the Hermanus Wine Route in South Africa’s Walker Bay region. The Streeter family, owners of this idyllic estate, have transformed it into a premier wine tourism destination, celebrated for its breathtaking location, luxury accommodations, and eco-friendly tours.

Our Commitments to Support Local Communities

We are committed to the standards recommended by Wines of South Africa (WoSA) and its Sustainable Wine South Africa (SWSA) program. This commitment is reflected in our adherence to the WOSA #Hannuwa initiative, which emphasizes sustainable farming, land stewardship, and the protection of biodiversity.

The estate takes pride in its strong ties to local businesses. We source flowers from Bosman Hermanus, meat from a local butcher in Onrus, and fresh, sustainably sourced seafood from Abalobi. Chef Annie Badenhorst's culinary philosophy centres around sustainability, and by partnering with Abalobi's Fish With A Story initiative she ensures that seafood is fully traceable and caught using eco-friendly methods. This supports small-scale fishers and promotes a more ethical and sustainable food system. Our art gallery and on-site curio shop supports local artisans by selling their crafts and artworks.

Penny Streeter OBE, the owner and developer, is a significant employer in the region, offering various jobs from farming to hospitality and beyond. The estate's internship programs, and seasonal employment opportunities provide valuable work experience, contributing to the local economy.

Enhancing Community Life

The estate hires local musicians for live events and employs a local guide for nature walks, enhancing the Hermanus experience for visitors. Benguela Cove’s community initiatives include donations to the Overberg Wheelchair Association and support for the Hermanus Homeless Shelter. As an active member of the Hermanus Business Chamber, the estate plays a pivotal role in shaping the local business landscape.

CSR and Sustainability in Action

Benguela Cove's commitment to sustainability is evident in its business practices. The estate recycles wine bottles, prints business cards on recycled paper, and sources guest amenities locally. The promotion of local craft beer and bottled water from Tessies further showcases Hermanus’s artisanal products. The estate’s growth directly benefits the community through the employment of local builders and sourcing of local materials for villa construction.
