Cape Buffalo
Cape Buffalo Sculpture by Carol Bryant
Where the Wild Things Come to Rest Exhibition
The Cape buffalo carries a reputation few African animals match. Herds move as one, but old bulls often break away and live alone, and it's this solitary figure that Carol Bryant sculpts here. The pose is grounded and still, head held low, eyes forward. Nothing about the stance asks for attention, yet it holds it.
Bryant works in resin for this piece, a material that lets her build fine surface texture, the ridges of the boss, the folds around the neck, without the weight or cost of bronze casting. The result reads as convincingly as any larger work in the collection and suits a garden bed, a shaded veranda corner or an entrance hall equally well. Resin holds detail well outdoors, but a spot out of prolonged direct sun keeps the surface looking sharp for longest.
Cape Buffalo forms part of 'Where the wild things come to rest', Carol Bryant's outdoor exhibition at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, running from 2 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Twenty sculptures sit across the estate's lagoon edge, fynbos walk and gardens for the length of the show, and every piece, this one included, is available to buy.
From the Artist
"It was dusk in the Mara when we came across this buffalo. The first impression was of a grumpy old man. But in fact, I think he was a solitary male, and the malevolent glare was just caution, or even his natural expression."
