A Case of Syrah and a Wine Tasting for Two near Hermanus

What does the tasting include? 

Two people each choose any five wines from the estate range and taste them with a wine ambassador, who talks you through where each one comes from and how it was made. It runs about 45 minutes. The tasting room sits above the Bot River Lagoon inside the Kogelberg UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, 15 km and roughly 12 minutes from Hermanus town centre. Buy wine on the day and you pay cellar door prices. Open daily, 10:00 to 18:00.

Stay for lunch at Moody Lagoon, take the Lady Bonnie pontoon out on the water, or walk the 12 km trail. The estate is 88 km from Cape Town International Airport, about an hour's drive. 

The wine in the case

Our Syrah comes off north facing vineyards on iron laterites, chalk and granite, 2 km from the Atlantic. Cool air draws out ripening, so the fruit builds structure slowly. Cellar Master Johann Fourie uses whole bunches with destemmed berries, then 20 months in French oak, 30% new.

Expect plum, liquorice and rose petals, white pepper and fynbos, the fine-leaved shrubland native to the Cape. Silky tannins hold blueberry fruit, and cocoa lingers. Serve at 15 to 16°C with lamb tagine or a slow stew. It will age for up to eight years from vintage.

The 2021 Estate Syrah won Gold at Veritas 2024, took 91 points from Tim Atkin and earned 4.5 stars and 94 points in Platter's.
