Chasing Cheetah Maquette, Bronze Sculpture by Carol Bryant

A maquette is a smaller working study, and this one shows a cheetah mid-chase, spine arched into the stretch that gives the species its extra reach at speed. Bronze holds that kind of tension well. The metal carries the line of the back leg to nose in one unbroken sweep, and the cat looks caught between strides rather than posed for one.

Carol Bryant developed the piece after watching a cheetah run down a lure rather than live prey, a slower, more visible version of the chase that let her study the mechanics properly. Anyone who has watched cheetah footage will recognise the moment, the low body, the tail out for balance, the spine doing most of the work.

At 61 cm long, the maquette suits a desk, a mantel or a shelf where the movement can be seen at eye level. It sits within the Benguela Cove exhibition alongside its larger sibling, Large Chasing Cheetah, giving buyers a choice of scale for the same subject. Bronze needs little upkeep once in place, an occasional wipe is normally enough, whether the piece stands indoors or out. Both versions are available to buy throughout the show, which runs at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate from 2 October 2026 to 31 March 2027.

From the Artist

"I have seen cheetah chasing prey on safari, but this sculpture was done in response to watching a cheetah chasing a lure, so a much slower dash where I was able to observe the amazing spine-stretching technique these cats employ to get the vital edge over their prey, sometimes."
