Cheetah Cub Sculpture by Carol Bryant

Young cheetahs learn caution early, and this sculpture holds that lesson in a single resting pose. The cub lies low, weight settled, but the head stays up and the ears stay forward. Bryant modelled the piece after watching two cubs lie together under an acacia tree, dappled light breaking their outline against the grass. Cheetah mothers move cubs between hiding spots often in the first months, precisely to avoid the kind of stillness that could otherwise turn dangerous.

The resin surface takes fine detail well, the loose skin around the shoulders, the slight roundness still left from infancy, the beginnings of the adult cat's long legs. It's a quieter piece than the chase studies elsewhere in the collection, and works well paired with them or shown alone. Cheetah cubs face a hard start in the wild, only a small proportion reach adulthood, which gives a calm, watchful moment like this one an added weight.

Cheetah Cub is one of twenty sculptures in 'Where the wild things come to rest', Carol Bryant's exhibition across Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate from 2 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Visitors can view it in place during a tasting, a lagoon walk or a stay at the estate, and every piece on show is available to purchase.

From the Artist

"Even at a young age, instinct makes these elegant cats alert and watchful. This one was lying under an acacia tree with its sibling. The dappled light caused it to blend into the surrounding vegetation. It was the calmness that intrigued me."
