Lion Head Sculpture by Carol Bryant

Carol Bryant based this head study on the Marsh Pride males she observed in the Maasai Mara, though the piece isn't a portrait of any one lion. It's built instead around what she calls the majesty and strength that make these cats demand sculpting in the first place, the weight of the mane, the set of the jaw, the stillness of an animal that answers to nothing.

Resin lets Bryant model the mane's texture in detail, layer over layer, without the cost of a full bronze cast at this scale. The head alone stands 50 cm tall, enough presence for a plinth, a study or a garden wall niche where the lion can be seen at height. The Marsh Pride is one of the best-documented lion prides in East Africa, followed for decades by wildlife film crews, which is partly why its males carry such a strong visual identity.

Lion Head is part of 'Where the wild things come to rest', Carol Bryant's exhibition at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, running from 2 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Twenty sculptures sit across the estate for the length of the show, and every one, including this piece, is available to purchase.

From the Artist

"This sculpture is based on the Marsh Pride males in the Mara. It is not of any particular individual, but the majesty and strength of these big cats begs to be sculpted and painted. It is not for nothing they are named Kings."
