Otter
Otter Sculpture in Bronze by Carol Bryant
Otters move with a fluidity that Carol Bryant wanted to hold in bronze without losing, so this piece builds around the curve of the animal's spine rather than a static outline. She developed the pose after watching otters play in a nature reserve, noting how the tail works almost as a fifth limb, giving the body both flexibility and speed.
The finished sculpture stands tall and narrow at 60 cm, a shape that suits a plinth or a shelf where the curve of the body can be seen from more than one angle. A silver nitrate patination darkens the bronze unevenly across the surface, close to the sheen of wet fur. Otters have returned to many South African and British waterways in recent decades after a long decline, and sightings like the one behind this piece are becoming less unusual as a result.
Otter is part of 'Where the wild things come to rest', Carol Bryant's exhibition at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, on show from 2 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. It's a quieter, more domestic subject than some of the estate's larger safari pieces, and works well as a standalone purchase or alongside them.
From the Artist
"Watching otters playing seemingly tirelessly in a nature reserve, I started to plan a sculpture using the graceful curves of their supple bodies, and I soon had the pose I have used. Rather like the cheetah, the tail acts almost as a fifth leg and gives the animal its flexibility and speed."
