Owl and Mouse

Owl and Mouse Bronze Sculpture by Carol Bryant

Carol Bryant spotted this scene while walking through a wooded area, an owl staring fixedly at something on the ground, then the small rodent it had fixed on. Neither animal moved, each waiting, in Bryant's words, for the other to make the first move. That stillness, held between predator and prey, is what the bronze sculpture captures.

Casting both figures in bronze lets Bryant fix the tension permanently, the mouse frozen mid-step, the owl's head angled down without a hint of motion. It's a compact, narrative piece, easier to read at a glance than some of the larger single-animal studies in the collection, since the story sits in the relationship between the two figures rather than in one animal alone. At 28 cm long, it works well as a desk or shelf piece, small enough to hold attention without needing a room of its own.

Owl and Mouse is one of the exhibition's anchor works, placed along the winery precinct walk as part of 'Where the wild things come to rest', Carol Bryant's exhibition at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, running from 2 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. It's available to buy throughout the show.

From the Artist

"Predator and prey. I was walking in a wooded area and spotted this owl, I thought staring fixedly at something. Then I spotted the small rodent. Both were motionless in the way that only animals can be. Each waiting for the other to make the first move."
