Stretching Cat
Stretching Cat Sculpture by Carol Bryant in Bronze
Anyone who lives with a cat will recognise this pose immediately, back arched, front legs stretched forward, a stance Carol Bryant describes simply as her cats asking to have their tummy scratched. It's a departure from the wild subjects that dominate the rest of the collection, and one of the few pieces built from daily observation rather than a single memorable sighting.
The stretch proved harder to sculpt than expected. Bryant notes that the skeleton and muscle layers don't sit in their usual arrangement during this particular pose, which made the anatomy a genuinely interesting technical problem rather than a straightforward study. The bronze surface holds the result cleanly, the long line of the spine, the set of the shoulders, the give in the tail. It's a piece that tends to resonate with cat owners in particular, a familiar habit rendered in permanent form.
At 56 cm long, Stretching Cat suits a shelf, a windowsill or a side table indoors as easily as a garden setting. It's part of 'Where the wild things come to rest', Carol Bryant's exhibition at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, on show from 2 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, and is available to buy for the run of the show.
From the Artist
"This is a particular pose domestic cats assume. All my cats have stretched in this way. For our current feline, the message is 'scratch my tummy'. The sculpture was an interesting experience, with the skeleton and muscle layers not quite presenting as usual."
