Elephant's Child
Elephant's Child by Carol Bryant
Carol Bryant built this sculpture around a single moment on safari. A herd of elephants crossed her path, led by the matriarch, and one calf fell behind without noticing until it did, then broke into what Bryant calls a panicky run. The matriarch heard its squeal, came back for it, and pulled it in under her legs with a cuff of her trunk.
The sculpture holds that instant of the calf's dash, ears out, legs stretched, urgency in every line. Resin lets Bryant model the loose, wrinkled skin of a young elephant convincingly at this scale, and the piece works as a standalone study of movement even without the full story behind it.
Elephant's Child is one of the larger pieces in the collection at 80 cm long, and one of twenty sculptures across Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate for 'Where the wild things come to rest', on show from 2 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. A smaller bronze maquette of the same subject is also available for buyers who want the scene at a more compact scale.
From the Artist
"On safari we came across a herd of elephants browsing as they went. Crossing our path they were led by the matriarch. This little elephant was left behind. Minutes later, when he realised this, he broke into a panicky run. The matriarch heard his squeal, came to meet him and gave him a cuff with her trunk before tucking him in under her legs. A magical encounter."
