Elephant's Child Maquette
Elephant's Child Maquette in Bronze by Carol Bryant
This maquette repeats the scene behind Elephant's Child at a smaller, bronze scale. A calf strays from a moving herd, panics when it notices, and runs to catch up before its matriarch comes back to shepherd it in with her trunk. Carol Bryant witnessed the moment on safari and has now cast it twice, once in resin at 80 cm, and here in bronze at 40 cm.
Bronze changes the character of the piece slightly. The metal gives the calf's dash more weight and a harder edge to the movement, while still carrying the urgency of the original scene. At this size, the sculpture suits a shelf, a side table or a smaller garden setting where the full-size resin version would overwhelm the space.
The maquette forms part of 'Where the wild things come to rest', Carol Bryant's exhibition at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, running from 2 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. Buyers who want the larger version can view it elsewhere in the same collection, both are available to purchase for the length of the show.
From the Artist
"On safari we came across a herd of elephants browsing as they went. Crossing our path they were led by the matriarch. This little elephant was left behind. Minutes later, when he realised this, he broke into a panicky run. The matriarch heard his squeal, came to meet him and gave him a cuff with her trunk before tucking him in under her legs. A magical encounter."
