Best Lunch Special in Hermanus

Best Lunch Special in Hermanus

The Best Lunch between Cape Town and Hermanus? We Think So, Here's Why.

A weekday lunch special at Moody Lagoon Restaurant puts one of the Western Cape's finest kitchens within reach of anyone making the drive.

There's a particular kind of satisfaction in finding a seriously good lunch that doesn't require a special occasion to justify it. Moody Lagoon Restaurant at Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate has quietly become one of the most talked-about lunch spots between Cape Town and Hermanus - and the estate's new weekday lunch special makes it easier than ever to experience.

For R450 per person, you get a glass of estate wine from the Lighthouse Collection, a choice of starter and main or main and dessert, and a table with one of the most compelling views in the Overberg. It runs 1 April - 31 August 2026, Monday to Thursday, 12:00 to 17:00. No fuss. No dress code. Just good food, good wine, and the Bot River Lagoon stretching out in front of you.

What Makes This Lunch Special Worth the Drive?

Benguela Cove sits on the R43 between Bot River and Hermanus - about 90 minutes from Cape Town and 15 minutes west of town. The drive through the Overberg already earns its keep, but arriving at the estate tips the scale entirely.

Moody Lagoon Restaurant occupies an elevated position above the lagoon. Floor-to-ceiling windows pull the water and mountains into the room. The veranda extends the dining space outdoors when the weather allows - which, on the Walker Bay coastline, it usually does. The estate itself spans 200 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, and fynbos, backing onto the Bot River Lagoon where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.

It's a genuinely world-class setting. Benguela Cove ranked among the World's Best Vineyards in both 2023 and 2024. The P20/G20 summit hosted its opening ceremony here in October 2025. None of that matters when you're sitting down to lunch - except that it tells you the estate takes what it does seriously.

The Kitchen: Seasonal, Sourced, and Chef-Led

Executive Chef Christo Hattingh runs the Moody Lagoon kitchen with a focus on seasonal produce sourced from ethical local traders. The menu changes regularly - a deliberate choice that keeps dishes honest and ingredients at their best.

The cooking style sits at the intersection of contemporary South African and French-influenced - precise technique applied to local ingredients without the pretension. West Coast line-caught fish, Karoo lamb, estate-grown olive oil, fresh oysters, seasonal fruit. The kitchen accommodates most dietary requirements, including vegetarian options. Flag any requirements at the time of booking.

The Lighthouse Collection: What Wine Do You Get?

The lunch special includes a glass from Benguela Cove's Lighthouse Collection - four options, all estate-grown and produced on-site:

  • Lighthouse Collection Sauvignon Blanc - a cool-climate expression from Walker Bay, with citrus and fynbos character
  • Lighthouse Collection Rosé - fresh and food-friendly, a strong choice with seafood or lighter starters
  • Lighthouse Collection Syrah - structured and spiced, built for red meat or aged cheese
  • Moody Lagoon Red Blend - the house red, designed specifically for the restaurant

All Benguela Cove wines are available at cellar door prices. Cellar Master Johann Fourie has been making wine at the estate since it opened in 2017, using only estate-grown grapes. If you want to explore further, book a guided wine tasting at the Tasting Room before or after lunch.

Who Should Book the Lunch Special?

Day-trippers from Cape Town. The two-hour drive makes for an easy half-day out. Leave mid-morning, arrive for a leisurely lunch, spend an hour on the lagoon or in the tasting room, and be back in the city by late afternoon.

Locals from Hermanus and the Overberg. At R450, this is one of the most straightforward value propositions in the region.

Business lunches. The restaurant is private enough for a working lunch and impressive enough to do the talking for you. Card payments only, which keeps things uncomplicated.

Families. A kids' menu is available, the courtyard has family games, and the estate runs a children's Splash Pad and Pirate Adventure Golf - which means the adults can linger over a second glass while the kids are kept well occupied.

Foodies and wine enthusiasts. The lunch special is the most accessible entry point to what the kitchen produces. If you want to go deeper, ask about multi-course wine pairing experiences when you book.

Plan Your Visit: What to Do Before and After Lunch

Lunch at Moody Lagoon works well as part of a fuller day out. Here's how to build it:

Before lunch:

  • Arrive at 10:30 for a wine tasting or cellar tour at the Tasting Room
  • Join the Saturday morning Park Run (free, every week from the estate) and make a weekend of it

After lunch:

  • Book ahead for a guided nature walk and wine tasting
  • Enjoy a thrilling round of Pirate Adventure Golf
  • Villa guests can walk or run one of the 12 km estate trails through the vineyards and fynbos
  • Browse the estate's art installations - original works placed throughout the grounds
  • Stay for live music on Sundays

Between June and December, southern right whales move through Walker Bay. Hermanus is globally recognised as one of the top twelve land-based whale-watching destinations.

Sustainability at the Table

Benguela Cove holds Travelife Gold certification for accommodation sustainability and WWF Conservation Champion status - two of the most credible environmental credentials in South African tourism. The kitchen reflects the same philosophy: Chef Hattingh sources from ethical local traders, builds menus around seasonal availability, and minimises food miles across every service.

The estate operates under the /Xam San principle of hannuwa - living in sustainable harmony with the natural environment. That shapes farming, winemaking, and the way the kitchen buys and cooks. If you care where your food comes from, Benguela Cove is a place that shares that instinct.

Staying Over: Waterfront Villas on the Estate

If lunch stretches into an afternoon of wine and lagoon views, the estate has accommodation to match.

Benguela Cove offers waterfront self-catering and fully serviced villa accommodation across 13 architect-designed estate homes, plus a 10-bedroom Manor House with two pools, a bar, and a gym. Every villa includes a private pool, wood-fired hot tub, and mindful amenities. A private chef and butler are available on request.

It's the kind of place that turns a lunch into a long weekend.
