Firesides, Cool-Climate Wines, and Festive Feasting: Why Christmas in July at Benguela Cove is Worth the Drive
By Christo Hattingh, Executive Head Chef, Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate
There is a distinct magic to winter in the Western Cape. When the crisp sea mist rolls off Walker Bay and settles over the waters of the Kogelberg Biosphere, the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation. It is cosy, moody, and spectacularly beautiful—the absolute perfect backdrop for gathering around a long table heavy with comfort food.
Having prepared winter feasts across three continents, from the snow-dusted valleys of Germany and the rugged highlands of Scotland to right here in the Cape, I have learned that mid-winter dining is about far more than just a meal. It is an invitation to slow down, lean into the warmth of a roaring fire, and let a lunch stretch blissfully into the late afternoon.
On Sunday, 19 July 2026, we are opening the doors of the Moody Lagoon Restaurant from 12:00 to 17:00 to host our signature Christmas in July Sharing Lunch. It is an event my kitchen team looks forward to all year, and we have designed an experience to bring the soul-warming joy of a traditional European winter feast right to our coastal sanctuary.
The Spirit of Mid-Winter Abundance
Christmas in July is our favourite way to flip the calendar and embrace the romance of a true cold-weather holiday. While December in South Africa calls for sun-drenched braais and crisp salads, July demands crackling log fires, rich aromas wafting from the kitchen, and bold, complex wines that wrap around you like a wool blanket.
Moody Lagoon, with its sweeping floor-to-ceiling glass walls, becomes a cozy frontline seat to nature's winter theatre. You will be cocooned in absolute comfort, watching the elements dance over the water while enjoying an environment tailored for laughter, storytelling, and effortless connection.
The Culinary Event: A Decadent, Harvest-Style Feast
This year, I have abandoned the formality of individual plating in favour of a spectacular, grand-format harvest layout. Food tastes better when it is shared, passed across the table, and celebrated together. We are sourcing the absolute finest local components from our own estate gardens and trusted regional producers to bring a professional chef's precision to the comforting soul of a family heritage lunch.
Here is what awaits your table:
-
To Begin: A beautifully baked, warm milkbun wreath served with a curated trio of custom-flavoured artisan butters.
-
The Majestic Centrepiece: Tables select their core roast to anchor the feast. Choose between succulent traditional turkey accompanied by a vibrant cranberry reduction, rich gammon caramelised with a sweet pineapple and smoky BBQ basting, or golden roast chicken filled with a deeply aromatic traditional stuffing.
-
The Accompaniments: Your chosen roast is flanked by a classic, creamy potato salad and a duo of steaming hot sides selected by your table - including crispy roasted baby potatoes, a vibrant medley of mixed vegetables tossed with peppadews and extra virgin olive oil, or our velvety cumin and coriander carrot mash.
-
The Sweet Finale: A luxurious, canapé-style dessert spread featuring delicate cream puffs piped with a warm cinnamon mousse alongside our crown jewel; the signature Benguela Christmas Pudding, steamed to perfection and served with rich whipped cream.
Perfect Pouring: Master the Art of Winter Pairing
A feast of this scale demands wines of equal character. Our estate's unique maritime terroir and cool-climate conditions give our vintages an elegant structure and vibrant acidity that come alive when paired with hearty winter textures.
If your table opts for the gammon, reach for our Estate Sauvignon Blanc. The crisp, bright citrus notes and flinty minerality effortlessly slice through the sweetness of the pineapple and BBQ basting.
Choosing the turkey? The Estate Chardonnay is its natural soulmate, offering an elegantly knit profile of flint, white peach, and nougat that beautifully elevates the rich poultry.
For the traditional chicken and stuffing, I highly recommend pouring our Estate Syrah. Its seductive bouquet of violet perfume, white pepper, and dark chocolate complements the savoury herbs of the stuffing beautifully without overwhelming the palate.
And do not miss an unexpected match to end the afternoon: our vibrant Lighthouse Rosé provides a brilliant, berry-forward contrast to the spiced density of our signature Christmas Pudding.
Make it a Day Trip: A Winter Wonderland Worth the Drive
Located just 15 km from Hermanus and an easy, scenic 88 km drive from Cape Town International Airport, Benguela Cove is the ultimate winter escape. July happens to be the peak of the world-renowned whale-watching season along the Cape Whale Coast. You can easily spend your morning watching southern right whales breach from the Hermanus cliff paths before heading over to the estate for a long, lazy lunch by the fire.
Turn your lunch into a full-day estate adventure:
-
Kick off the day with a pre-lunch flight in our ambient Wine Tasting Lounge.
-
Let the kids play at our 18-hole Pirate Adventure Golf course or enclosed courtyard featuring giant chess, games and tasteful play areas.
-
Take to the water on the Lady Bonnie pontoon boat for a moody, beautiful winter lagoon cruise.

Is Benguela Cove a good wet-weather option in July?
Absolutely. While Cape winter fronts bring dramatic skies and cool rain, Moody Lagoon is entirely weather-proof. Our massive glass windows allow you to take in the panoramic, mist-covered mountain and lagoon views while staying perfectly warm, dry, and cozy next to our indoor fireplaces.
Do we need to choose our roast meat option before arriving?
Yes, booking in advance is essential because our kitchen team custom-crafts, bastes, and roasts each large-format platter specifically to match the exact size and choice of your table.
Are there dedicated options for children?
Yes! Our harvest-style sharing format is inherently family-friendly, allowing everyone to dig in together. We also feature a dedicated children's menu for R200 per child under 12, and the estate offers great spaces like the adventure golf course to keep them entertained.
Can we taste or buy wine on the day to take home?
Definitely. Our tasting room operates daily. We highly recommend arriving an hour before your lunch booking to explore our cool-climate wine ranges and pick out the perfect bottles for your dining table or your cellar at home.
What makes Benguela Cove a sustainable dining destination?
We believe in honouring the landscape that feeds us. Benguela Cove is a certified WWF Conservation Champion and holds Travelife Gold status. Nestled in the Kogelberg UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, we practice sustainable viticulture, and my kitchen relies heavily on ethically sourced local meats, estate-grown olive oil, and fresh herbs from our own gardens to ensure our footprint remains as pristine as our surroundings.
