Anchored in the Atlantic: Three September Offers from Benguela Cove
Pour the 2025 Estate Sauvignon Blanc and you know exactly where you are standing. Gooseberry. Gunflint. A mineral snap like wet oyster shell, then a finish that will not quit. That is the Atlantic talking. Our vineyards run along a 2.7 km ocean-facing stretch, grown 3 m above sea level, and that coastal influence never stops working.
This is the story of every wine we make. Cold water, cold nights, slow ripening. Wines that come at you with drive rather than weight. Through September we are putting three of them in front of you, and I want to tell you why they taste the way they do before I tell you how to get them.
The cold water does the work
Benguela Cove sits on 2.7 km of private waterfront on the Bot River Lagoon, inside the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, South Africa's first declared biosphere. Look one way and you see vineyards. Look the other and you see the lagoon running down to the ocean.
Two bodies of water hold the temperature down. Daytime highs stay moderate. Nights drop hard. That gap between day and night, the diurnal range, is the whole game in cool climate wine. Grapes ripen slowly. Flavour builds. Acidity stays. Nothing gets baked.
Maritime winds do the rest. They keep the canopies healthy and the disease pressure low, which means we intervene less in the vineyard and pick when the fruit is ready rather than when it is rescued.
You taste all of this. Every wine here has a spine.
Farming inside a biosphere reserve also sets the rules. We are a WWF Conservation Champion and Travelife Gold certified, so the fynbos corridors, the water and the lagoon edge get protected alongside the vines. That is not decoration. Healthy land grows better fruit, and the wine tells you so.
Single origin, every bottle
The Estate Range is 100% estate grown. Not bought in. Not blended across regions. Grown on these slopes, picked here, made here, in a cellar you can walk into.
That matters more than it sounds. Single origin means the wine can only taste like this one place. It also means Cellar Master Johann Fourie knows every block, which soil sits under it and how it behaved last season. The vineyards run across iron laterites, shale, chalk, granite and weathered shale with high calcium. Different blocks, different jobs.
The record backs it up, vintage after vintage:
-
2025 Estate Sauvignon Blanc, 95 points and Gold, Fine Wine Awards 2026
-
2024 Estate Sauvignon Blanc, 92 points and a Top 100 place, James Suckling 2025
-
2024 Estate Pinot Noir, 94 points, Fine Wine Awards 2025, and 92 points from James Suckling
-
2022 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 93 points, Fine Wine Awards 2026
-
2021 Estate Syrah, Gold at Veritas 2024, 91 points from Tim Atkin, 4.5 stars and 94 points in Platter's
Five varieties. Five sets of accolades. One stretch of coastline. That consistency is the point.
Anyone can land one good vintage. Repeating it across five varieties, in a climate this marginal, takes a team that knows the ground. Read the full list on our Awards page and watch the pattern rather than the individual scores. Whites and reds, warm years and cool ones, the wines keep landing in the same band.
The wines, and what they do
Estate Sauvignon Blanc. Preserved gooseberry, gunflint, lemon candy. Orange blossom and grapefruit carry through the palate. The mouthfeel turns mineral, almost saline, then finishes clean and dry. Sixty five per cent barrel fermented, so the acidity has been tamed without losing its edge. Serve at 12°C. Swordfish carpaccio. Asparagus tarte tatin. Thai lemon beef.
Estate Chardonnay. Straw gold. Hazelnut and shortbread biscuit lead, then peach and yellow apple. Bold acidity, a gentle creaminess, citrus zest and a trace of crème brûlée. The mineral structure cuts straight through the texture. Beautiful wine. Ten months in oak, half of it new. Serve at 10 to 12°C with blue cheese gnocchi or escargot.
Estate Pinot Noir. Red cherry, a lick of spice, silky right through. Light on its feet and precise.
Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. Swirl it. Dark fruit, sour plums, violets, sweet leather and cool fynbos, the fine-leaved shrubland that grows across the estate. Twenty two months in French oak, 40% new, so the tannins arrive neat rather than dry. This will still be improving eight to ten years from vintage. Ribeye with chimichurri. Rich tomato lamb stew.
Estate Syrah. The one I keep coming back to. Plum, liquorice and rose petals, then white pepper and fynbos over silky tannins. Blueberry fruit sits on top and cocoa lingers. Twenty months in French oak, 30% new, and Johann kept the oak in its place. Driven, savoury, honest. Cool climate Syrah at its most convincing. Lamb tagine, Rogan Josh, Moroccan chicken bastilla. Give it half an hour in a decanter and watch it open.
Ageing potential: eight years from vintage. It drinks phenomenally well right now.
Three offers, to 30 September
Here is how to bring it home. All three include nationwide delivery.
The Syrah Double, R3,500 Two cases, twelve bottles, of Estate Syrah. A Benguela Cove glass decanter, which sells on its own for R600, comes with them. Drink some now, lay some down.
The Cellar Master's Pair, R3,700 One case of Estate Syrah, plus a mixed case of two Sauvignon Blanc, two Chardonnay, one Pinot Noir and one Cabernet Sauvignon. The decanter comes with this one too. Twelve bottles, five varieties, the whole estate in two boxes.
A Case of Syrah & a Tasting, R1,770 One case, six bottles, of Estate Syrah, and two seats at a Signature Estate Wine Tasting on the estate. The cellar door charges R220 a head for that tasting. Here it comes with the wine.
Decanters go while stocks last. If they run out, we fulfil your wine order at the standard price for the wine, without one.

Then come and taste it at the source
Wine makes more sense when you can see the place it came from. Our tasting room sits above the lagoon, 15 km and about 12 minutes from Hermanus town centre, 88 km and roughly an hour from Cape Town International Airport.
Pick any five wines and taste them with a wine ambassador. It takes 45 minutes. You buy at cellar door prices on the day. We open daily, 10:00 to 18:00.
Then stay. Lunch at Moody Lagoon looks out over the water. Take the Lady Bonnie pontoon out on the lagoon. Drive the vineyard safari. Walk the 12 km trail, or run the Saturday Park Run, the weekly timed 5 km. Children get the splash pad and Pirate Adventure golf.
Book the tasting through A Case of Syrah & a Tasting and both halves of it are covered.
Cold water. Slow ripening. Wines with drive. Come and see where they start.
