Celebrating Shiraz and Smoke: An Exclusive Winter Winemakers' Lunch at Benguela Cove
Winter along the Walker Bay coast brings crisp ocean air, dramatic skies, and the ideal setting for deep, brooding red wines. To mark National Shiraz Day weekend, Benguela Cove Wine Estate invites wine lovers to an intimate culinary event: the Shiraz and Smoke Winemakers' Lunch on Saturday, 22 August 2026.
With only 16 seats available, Cellar Master Johann Fourie opens the estate's private library to guide guests through five distinct vintages of cool-climate Syrah, paired with smoke-infused winter gastronomy.
What Makes Benguela Cove's Terroir and Wines Unique?
Situated in the cool-climate Walker Bay region near Hermanus, Benguela Cove boasts the longest stretch of ocean-facing vineyards in South Africa (2.7 km) planted just 3 metres above sea level. Cold Atlantic breeze currents sweep across the maritime slopes, creating a gentle microclimate with low median daytime temperatures.
This maritime influence drives several distinctive wine characteristics:
- Slow Ripening: Cool prevailing winds extend the growing season, allowing grapes to develop complex flavours while retaining vibrant natural acidity.
- Signature Cool-Climate Syrah: Ocean air and unique soil profiles impart classic white pepper aromas, savoury complexity, and fine-grained tannins.
- 100% Estate Bottled: Every drop originates from the estate's 70 hectares of vineyards, ensuring total quality control from vine to glass.
- Eco-Driven Viticulture: As a WWF Conservation Champion set within the UNESCO Kogelberg Biosphere, the estate crafts its wines through sustainable farming and minimal intervention cellar practices.
The Wine Flight & Tasting Line-up
This exclusive long-table gathering offers a rare opportunity to taste mature library stocks alongside current releases, tracking how Benguela Cove's maritime terroir evolves in the bottle:
- Arrival: Lighthouse Rosé served fireside at the open fire pit.
- Estate Syrah 2017: A savoury, aged library vintage showing remarkable depth.
- Estate Syrah 2019: A second library vintage demonstrating complex structure and spice.
- Estate Syrah 2021: A clear showcase of the estate's current-era winemaking style.
- The Side-by-Side Finale: A comparative tasting of the Estate Syrah 2022 and the Lighthouse Shiraz 2022.
Four Courses of Smoke, Char, and Braise
To complement each pour, the Moody Lagoon kitchen crafts a seasonal four-course menu centred around hearty winter techniques. Guests will enjoy four small plates featuring coal-roasted vegetables, rich slow-braised short rib, and potjie-style lamb shank.
The smoky char from the coals cuts through the rich tannin structure of the Syrah, creating a seamless harmony between food and glass.
Seven Days of Shiraz: Exclusive Offers for Attendees
The Winemakers' Lunch kicks off Benguela Cove's broader Seven Days of Shiraz Celebration, which features cellar-door promotions and limited vintage releases.
Guests attending the lunch receive special privileges:
- R250 Wine Voucher: Every guest receives a voucher redeemable on the day for wine purchases of R1,000 or more.
