Race to the Sea 2026: Finish Line Stay at Benguela Cove

Race to the Sea 2026: Finish Line Stay at Benguela Cove

Where the gravel ends and the weekend begins: King Price Race to the Sea 2026

There is a particular kind of quiet that arrives after 164 km of grit and gravel. The wind drops, the lagoon takes on its evening colour, and the only thing left to negotiate is the gentle walk from the finish line to your villa door. This is what makes the King Price Race to the Sea different to any other gravel event on the South African calendar, and why we are proud, for another year, to be the official Race Village.

On Saturday, 5 September 2026, hundreds of riders will set off from the Huguenot Memorial Monument in Franschhoek for a route that climbs the Franschhoek Pass, threads through orchards and vineyards, opens out across the golden canola of the Overberg, and finally drops down into Walker Bay. Both the 100-mile and 50-mile races end on our estate. Whether you are racing for a podium, riding with friends, or coming along to cheer a partner home, this is a weekend that deserves a proper base.

The logistics that make a finish-line stay work

The genius of Race to the Sea is the point-to-point format, and the genius of the Faces team is the vehicle transfer service. Hand your car keys in at the NG Kerk in Franschhoek on Saturday morning, climb on the bike, and your vehicle is delivered, in convoy, to Benguela Cove while you ride. By the time you cross the line, your car is waiting. So is the rest of your weekend. No drive home after a 164 km day on your bike, no scrambling for accommodation in Hermanus, no separating the supporter crew from the rider for hours of waiting. Just walk into your villa, kick off the cycling shoes, and let the estate do the work.

What it actually looks like at Benguela Cove on race day?

By mid-afternoon on Saturday, the lawns at the Race Village are full of families, partners and friends who have been here since brunchtime. Blackbeard's Diner is busy with burgers and beer on tap. The deck bar is pouring our cool-climate whites and rosés. Kids run barefoot on the grass. Picnic baskets are spread under the trees. As each rider rolls in, there is a small cheer, a hug, a cold drink, and a quiet moment looking out across the lagoon. It is, we think, one of the best afternoons of the South African cycling year. The riders who have stayed with us before tell us it is the recovery that they remember most: the villa pool, the private hot tub, the long sunset on the deck, and the deep sleep that follows.

Race to the Sea Accommodation, our 2026 Offer

For the 2026 edition we are putting together our sharpest accommodation offer yet, available only when you book direct. Riders and their support crews who book through stay@benguelacove.co.za save 20% on our standard rates, with a two-night minimum stay over race weekend. Every booking also includes a R750 estate food and beverage credit per villa, which can be spent at Blackbeard's Diner, the deck bar, Moody Lagoon or on a race-day picnic basket. Kids stay free. Pets are welcome on this offer with a R350 cleaning fee per pet.

If you can stretch the stay, the offer rewards you for it. Three-night stays include a complimentary lagoon cruise for two. Four-night stays, Thursday to Monday, add a R500 estate-experience credit, redeemable at Pirate Adventure Golf, the tasting room, or a guided vineyard walk. Early September happens to coincide with the opening of the Western Cape wildflower season, and after this year's winter rains the display is forecast to be one of the best in living memory, with the Kogelberg Biosphere right on our doorstep.

Estate Welcome Pack Included

All of our direct accommodation bookings, Race to the Sea or otherwise, include the Estate Welcome Pack: a complimentary wine tasting for two on arrival, a bottle of estate wine waiting in your villa, flexible check-in and late check-out where available, and a direct line to our reservations team for anything you need before or during your stay.

Our villa portfolio runs from intimate three-bedroom homes for six guests, through four-bedroom homes for eight, up to our five-bedroom lagoon and ocean-view villas that sleep ten. For larger groups, the exclusive-use Benguela Manor accommodates twenty in ten bedrooms, with an indoor and outdoor pool, sauna, steam room, hot tub, gym, library and a wood-fired pizza oven on the deck. Most riders book between the four and five-bedroom villas, with families and support crews making up the numbers.

Book your weekend

Race to the Sea 2026 entries close on 31 August through Howler. Accommodation, on the other hand, tends to book out earlier, particularly the larger villas. Our recommendation is to book by the end of July to avoid disappointment.
