One Terroir, Two Paths: Unpacking Walker Bay Syrah This Winter.

One Terroir, Two Paths: Unpacking Walker Bay Syrah This Winter.

The cold winter wind coming off the Atlantic Ocean sweeps across the Lagoon, chilling the vines at Benguela Cove. This constant maritime airflow defines the Walker Bay wine region, slowing grape ripening and locking in natural acidity. While our estate spans just 200 hectares, the terrain changes dramatically from the edge of the water up onto the exposed ridges.

This month, Cellar Master Johann Fourie highlights this geographic diversity by pairing two red wines grown on the same hillside: the Benguela Cove Estate Syrah and the Lighthouse Shiraz. Though they share a vintage and grow only kilometres apart, they tell different stories of the same coast.

The Structural Depth of Estate Syrah

The Estate Syrah grows in parcels that feel the full force of the coastal wind, forcing the vines to work harder. Johann Fourie treats this fruit with traditional Old-World restraint, ensuring oak supports rather than dominates the varietal character. The result is a structured wine that leans into its savoury elements. Expect white pepper, dark fruit, and fine, powdery tannins that ensure long-term cellaring potential.

The Vibrant Perfume of Lighthouse Shiraz

Further along the slope, our Lighthouse vineyards yield a different expression. This site produces fruit with softer tannins and vivid, immediate aromatics. The Lighthouse Shiraz opens with violet perfumes and rich mulberry flavours. It provides a bright, peppery palate that makes it accessible from early release. It represents the playful, fruit-forward side of maritime winemaking.

Completing the Winter Selection

To anchor these two single-varietal explorations, we have included our flagship Bordeaux-style blend, Collage. This five-cultivar blend acts as a canvas of the estate, combining structure, bright fruit, and fine texture.

These three wines form our exclusive July Case, priced at R840. To celebrate the release, every case purchased includes a branded Benguela Cove decanter at no extra cost while stock lasts.
