September changes the estate quickly. One week the vineyard looks bare and the fynbos reads as scrub, the next the slopes above the lagoon turn yellow and pink, the first buds break on the vines, and the southern rights are still working their way along Walker Bay. Spring here is short. It rewards planning. 

The evenings drop away fast this month too. Days warm up, the wind gets going by mid-afternoon, and around seven o'clock you want to be outside with something hot. That is the case for a wood-fired hot tub, and why we would send you to Swallows Rest this month. 

Why a wood-fired hot tub earns its place in spring 

A wood-fired tub heats water with a fire rather than a heat pump. You load the burner and you wait, and while you wait the light goes off the lagoon. It takes longer than flicking a switch, which is the point. Nobody should rush the last hour of a spring day out here. 

Ten of our twelve villas have a wood-fired hot tub. Sea Whisper has a private hot tub of its own. Only Azure Retreat goes without, trading the tub for the highest lagoon outlook on the estate. 

Swallows Rest, the villa that faces the vines 

Villa 83 is the only house on the estate that looks across the working vineyard rather than the lagoon, and it has a different feel. Fynbos runs up to the fence. The bedroom mix is deliberately uneven, which suits a group of friends better than five identical suites would. 

What is flowering, and where to walk to find it 

Benguela Cove sits inside the UNESCO Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, the first biosphere reserve declared in South Africa and the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom. We have recorded 1,880 floral species on the estate. In September you do not need a guide to notice the difference between one week and the next. 

A 12 km trail loops the property for walking and running, and parkrun goes every Saturday morning. If you want the botany explained, book the Guided Nature Walk and Wine Tasting at R450 a head. Those records feed our estate species database and support conservation science across the biosphere. 

None of that is marketing language. WWF has named Benguela Cove a Conservation Champion. We hold Travelife certification, audited each year. We run wildlife cameras with the Cape Leopard Trust, and the footage picks up leopard, caracal, honey badger and porcupine crossing the estate at night. 

Whales, and where to watch them properly 

Southern right whales work this coast from June to November, so September sits in the middle of the season. Hermanus is 15 km away, about twelve minutes, and the Cliff Path there gives some of the best land-based whale watching anywhere in the world. Grotto and Voelklip are both Blue Flag beaches and both are a short drive. 

From the estate you look across the lagoon and out towards Walker Bay, so bring binoculars rather than expecting a whale at the breakfast table. For time on the water, the Lady Bonnie pontoon runs cruises on the lagoon. 

What else spring is good for 

Book direct and your arrival includes a wine tasting for two and a bottle of estate wine, along with priority on restaurant reservation requests and a direct line to the reservations team. 

Frequently asked questions 

Is September too early in the season for the Overberg? 
No, it is one of the better months, and villas are easier to get than in December. Pack for two seasons in one day: warm mornings, wind by mid-afternoon, cold once the sun goes. 

Do we need a car? 
Yes. Cape Town International is 88 km away, about an hour, and the city centre is 95 km, roughly an hour and ten minutes. Hermanus town is twelve minutes and the nearest supermarket is Whale Coast Mall on the R43. A car and driver can be arranged on request if you would rather not drive after a tasting. 

Can we bring our dogs? 
Two dogs are welcome at Swallows Rest at R350 per dog per night, and nine of our twelve villas accept them. Tell reservations when you book so we place you in the right house. 

What is provided in a self-catering villa? 
Linen, towels, toilet paper, soap, body wash and shampoo throughout the stay, plus tea, coffee, sugar and long-life milk to start you off. You buy everything else. Daily housekeeping is included and every villa runs inverter backup power. 

Can we have a party? 
No. The villas sit in a residential part of the estate, so we do not allow parties or events. Up to two day visitors are welcome and must leave before midnight, and we ask for quiet after 22:00. For a celebration with real numbers, Benguela Manor takes twenty guests on an exclusive-use basis.
